Name = “Pore bearing” • About 9,000 species of sponges • Multicellular- but no tissues, organs, or nervous system • 3 Basic Types of Cells: • Pinacocytes= outer surface • Mesenchyme cells= middle cells (amoeboid like) • Choanocytes= line the inner chamber (flagellated)

Sponge skeleton made of spiculesand/or spongin. *Type of spicule defines class of sponge. http://faculty.orangecoastcollege.edu/mperkins/zoo-review/porifera/files/bryan-sponge-spicules-lg.jpg http://www.occc.edu/biologylabs/Images/Animal_Images/sponge_body.gif http://oceanlink.island.net/LEYS/images/SPICULES.gif
3 sponge body forms: • Ascon= vase-like (*simplest form) • Sycon= folded wall • Leucon= branched with canals (large surface area) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/20/Porifera_body_structures_01.png/439px-Porifera_body_structures_01.png
Feeding • Most common way to feed: Choanocytes filter food form water. • Food= bacteria, microscopic algea, protists, etc. • Food vacuoles digest food and send to mesenchyme cells • Reproduction • Most sponges are monoeicous (have both sexes) *Certain choanocytes may turn into sperm or eggs • Most fertilization occurs in open water • Planktonic larvae develop, settle, and develop into adult forms • Asexual reproduction sometimes through gemmules(resistant masses of mesenchyme cells)
