Purpose of the Evening • Introduce parents to Novi High School and prepare them for their child’s transition • Provide parents & guardians with an opportunity to meet the counseling staff • Prepare parents for the scheduling process and what to expect the next four years • Answer questions to make the transition to high school easier

Cumulative Grading • Cumulative Grading: • Semester grades (.5 credits) are determined by the culmination of 18 weeks of academic assessments. • After the first nine (9) weeks of each semester, progress reports will be distributed in Academic Advisory. • Nine (9) week grades are a reflection of student progress midway through the semester. • Semester grades will be issued after 18 weeks and are the only grades that are calculated into the grade point average (GPA) and recorded on the official transcript. • Advantages of Cumulative Grading: • Accurately reflects learning over the semester • Allows for greater flexibility as there are fewer arbitrary dates that determine grades • Easier tracking of academic progress, as current grade is the grade • Reflects practices of colleges and universities

What does Credit Mean? • Credit is granted when a student successfully completes and passes a class (D-). • The class of 2016 must have 22 credits to graduate. • For each successfully completed course a student receives a .5 credit (most core classes run two semesters and students will earn one full completed credit)

  11. What is GPA? • Grade Point Average • Grade Point Average (GPA) is based on all subjects taken in grades 9-12 and High School classes that were taken at the Middle School. Advanced classes are not weighted. • Four Point Scale: A=4; B=3; C=2; D=1; E=0 • Passing Marks: A - D • Novi High School does not calculate rank or percentile.

Operation Graduation • #1 Graduation Audit mailed home each June for all students, grades 9-11, who fail one (1) or more core courses • In the fall, counselors meet with student and notifies parents; identifies a plan and/or strategies • #2 If student does not show improvement and continues to fail = meeting, parent notification, and plan of action (AASC) • If a student loses four (4) or more credits required for graduation, a meeting is held with administrator, counselor, student and parent to modify plan and discuss adult education.

Graduation Audit • Occurs at the end of each school year • Fail one (1) or more core courses (.5 credit) • Notify if on track for graduation • Credit recovery • Support Resources • Remaining classes required for graduation • Number of credits need for graduation • Number of credits needed outside of traditional day

Academic Advisory • Meets every Wednesday for 40 minutes • Same teacher all four years (big-small) • Students can travel to current teachers w/orange pass maximum two times per period • Reserved for academics and school business (homecoming, scheduling, academic meetings, etc.) • Access to the Media Center on a sign-up basis

AA Support Centers • Each counselor is teamed up with an administrator • Analyze D,E,I list at nine (9) weeks; student with two (2) or more E’s meet with support team • At nine (9) week report cards, students who still have one (1) or more E’s are assigned to AASC • Require three (3) consecutive weeks of passing all 6 classes to “graduate” back to original AA • Focus on work completion accountability, organization, prioritizing, alternative opportunities, tutoring, etc.

Refer to the student handbook, high school website & school email to stay connected with what is going on. • Set goals. • Stay on track for graduation by studying and completing homework assignments. • Never give up & strive to do your best. • Use technology appropriately. • Don’t give into peer pressure. • Don’t be afraid. The best is yet to come!
