EVIDENCE OF INCREASED SUPPORT FOR YAM IN YOUR STATE Sargent Art Prize Winners: Students of KAEA members were eligible to win prizes for their YAM artwork. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & honorable mentions were given in the High School, Middle School, and Elementary school categories. The grand prize winner received a trip to New York for themselves, a parent, and their art teacher thanks to Sargent Art.

He will receive an all expense paid trip with one of his parents and his art teacher, Joe Summers to New York City.

5. EVIDENCE OF INCREASED SUPPORT FOR YAM IN YOUR STATE YAM Flag design: Awards and prizes were given to the winners of the YAM flag contest thanks to Molly Hawkins. 6. YAM Flag Design Contest Winner The Grand Prize winner’s design will be made into the Kansas YAM flag which will represent Kansas at the National Art Education Conference in San Diego. In March, a National flag event will be held in Washington DC and the Grand Prize flag designer will be recognized in a ceremony. 8. EVIDENCE OF INCREASED SUPPORT FOR YAM IN YOUR STATE New this year- VIRTUAL ART GALLERY Teachers were invited to submit student’s work digitally. The virtual gallery was on display at the capital on March 1, 2014 and entries for the virtual gallery will become part of the KAEA YAM gallery at the national convention in San Diego on March 28-31 and the on the KAEA web site.  The virtual gallery can be seen here: http://www.kaea.com/yam.html

9. Funding for state activities specifically designated for YAM (monies and in kind donations) List only major contributions here. Sargent Art: trip to New York, art supplies for award winners and for creation station Nasco- provided art supplies for all of the student attendees Molly Hawkins: prizes for the YAM flag winners Dillon’s: gift card used to purchase yams for the creation station Panera Bread: cookies for the reception NAEA YAM budget for 2014: $2000. The budget increased by $800 since 2013.

10. PROCLAMATION Governor Sam Brownback signed the proclamation for the state of Kansas.

11. ENDORSEMENTS • Provide a list of individuals, companies and associations that endorsed YAM in your state. • Include an image of the endorsement used.

12. EXTENT OF COOPERATION IN YOUR STATE The star represents a location where there was a YAM celebration/exhibit. Each teacher was invited to submit 1 artwork per school they taught at. 180 teachers submitted student work. 53% of the entries were submitted by members of KAEA. 72 virtual gallery entries were submitted. 839 people were in attendance at the YAM ceremony in Topeka, Kansas.

13. OBSERVANCES State Exhibit at Topeka Capitol Building Excerpts from Linda Nelson-Bova’s speech: Elliot Eisner championed the arts in education throughout his lifetime once saying "to neglect the contribution of the arts in education . . . is to deny children access to one of the most stunning aspects of their culture and one of the most potent means for developing their minds“. • So, by your being here today for this Youth Art Month celebration, you represent exactly the kind of symbol that shows our young adults that the arts are important. 14. OBSERVANCES Each year Cheney Middle School displays artwork at our local bank. The lobby is a great place for district patrons to see what our art students produce. The show is on display for the month of March with a sign that identifies it as part of our celebration of YAM.- Michaeline Kohler Katie Morris, CharleenStessman, Denise Ash, Taylor Lynch, teachers from Pauline Central Primary and Pauline South Intermediate School in the Auburn-Washburn District, displayed Elementary Art in the Board of Education Meeting Room and set up displays at Pauline Central and Pauline South.

15. OBSERVANCES Shawnee Mission West has a vertical team show celebrating YAM. Seven Elementary schools are involved as well as Westridge Middle & West High. - Greg Schieszer Teacher David Stueve set up a Youth Art Month exhibit at the Salina Public Library.

16. OBSERVANCES SMSD art teacher Laura Fisher and student at exhibit. Shawnee Mission art teachers and students celebrated Youth Art Month locally by displaying the artwork that hung at the Capitol at the Johnson County Central Resource Library. The library hosted a reception for teachers and students March 11th, which featured a presentation of state award winners, live music, refreshments, and readings from their published literary magazine. NEWSPAPER ARTICLES LOCAL STUDENT TO HAVE ART DISPLAYED AT THE STATE CAPITOL Concordia Elementary School YOUTH ART MONTH ACTIVITIES Riley McMillan, fourth grade, from Concordia Elementary School had art work on a virtual display as part of the Kansas Art Education Associations Youth Art Month celebration at the state capital held on March 1st, 2014. Youth Art Month is celebrated every March to emphasize the importance of a great quality art education programs in schools. Art education helps promote higher level thinking skills and teaches children that complex forms of problems are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity. Art education equips students to form mental images, which can be used to solve problems- an ability that chemists, engineers, and architects use to create models and inventors use to think of new ideas. Every teacher from the state of Kansas was eligible to submit one piece or art work from each school at they teach to be part of the display. This year, Concordia Elementary School was represented at the Kansas Art Education Association Youth Art Month reception with a charcoal flower drawing in a virtual display by Riley McMillan. Her charcoal drawing is an abstract drawing inspired by artist, Georgia O’Keeffe. YAM was created in 1961 by the ACMI, a non- profit association art and craft material manufacturers, in cooperation with the National Art Education Association, it is an annual observation that is celebrated nationally with a variety of activities. Concordia Elementary School will also be having a special display of art work representing grades kindergarten through 4th grade at Concordia’s Frank Carlson Public Library. You will find more 4th grade Georgia O’Keeffe inspired drawings as well as 3rd Grade self-portraits, 2nd grade Mondrian inspired animals, Monet inspired paintings, first grade landscapes and kindergarten collage.

(WIBW)- The Kansas Art Education Association hosted the annual Youth Art Month celebration and reception Saturday at the State Capital Rotunda. Students from around Kansas had work on display, prizes and scholarships were also handed out. Youth Art Month is an annual observance to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to support quality school art programs. The Kansas Art Education Association says that an education in arts exposes the students to a variety of cultures while enriching their learning experiences.
