UNDERSTANDING BY DESIGN& STANDARDS(Conference 1) Bellevue Public Schools in Nebraska developed a K-6 curriculum using Understanding by Design (McTighe and Wiggins) form. This process was completed over a five year period. The purpose is to communicate AASL standards when collaborating. It also provides assessment tool for each student for school year.
EXAMPLE: 2nd Grade Media (UbD) Goal 1 (AASL standard 1) Inquire, think critically and gain knowledge. This form is followed each time a teacher/librarian collaborate on a project. Teachers would be given a UbD for each AASL standard.
ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE Formative Assessment: Skills checklist for each student for the year. Librarian keeps checklist and students continue to use throughout the year. End Result: Assessment of each student/AASL standard.
EFFECTIVE WAY TO COMMUNICATE STANDARDS& ASSESSMENT OF STUDENTS? UbD form for standards? Already using UbD for projects Assessment Tools? Middle School experiment with Big 6/month as a way to access students?
RESOURCES Terry Osborne – Media Specialist at Bellevue Public Schools (Nebraska) (UbD and standards) Cathi Fuhrman – Hempfield High School (Big 6 and AASL) Michael Eisenberg – Big6 (Big 6 by the month/AASL standards)
DEEP LEARNING/CONCEPT =-BASED INQUIRY(Conference 2) Concept based inquiry increases the cognitive complexity of student work. Need to shift from fact gathering to concept based inquiry.
WHAT ARE CONCEPTS? Broad and abstract Universal in application & timeless Represented by different examples that share common attributes
EXAMPLES Animal Research Polar Bears (fact finding about each animal, i.e.,shelter, food, raising young, migration Migration of animals Compare different animals and their migration patterns. Energy Sources Wind Power (fact finding/ how, where, what Sustainability What alternative energy is most effective in a geographical area?
OTHER EXAMPLES • Conflict (World Civil Wars) • Ancient Civilizations (Legacies) • Justice (World Activists) • Change (Native Americans) • Disease Investigation (Yellow Death) • Survival (Out of the Dust)

TRANSFORMING LEARNING/ TODAY’S STUDENTSConference 3 Transliteracy is an umbrella for how people are using multiple literacies – traditional (text) and emerging (digital) to access, share, and create new meaning. A similar term is curation. New role of LMC to make sense of information by aggregating multiple types of resources (not just pathfinders of print resources on a subject).
