Viticulture history • Bulgaria is one of the oldest wine producing countries: 6000-3000 years before JC - Vineyards were cultivated thousand years before the Romans - Dyonisos cult, Zagreus • First wine institute founded in 1880 • During Communism(’45-89): 5th world wine producing country and 2 nd world largest exporter. • ’89- 2013: Wine industry revival, Land privatizations, Foreign and local investments.

Bulgarian Terroir Perfect conditions for viticulture: • Same latitude as Rioja, Ribera del Duero et Tuscany regions • Combination between 2 Climates: moderate Continental–mediterranean . • Soils: Cinnamon; humus-carbonated, grey forest soils, chernozems, alluvial soils, sandy etc. • Microclimates.
