The Market Technological Change
Changes in Technology • List as many changes in technology as you can think over the last: • 200 years • 100 years • 50 years • 10 years • These can be changes that affect business or society generally.
How has technology changed our lives? • 200 years ago. • Industrial revolution. Machines and engines introduced to allow ‘mass production” through division of labour.
How has technology changed our lives? • In the past 100 years. • Radio (1880/90’s) • Tv - John Logie Baird 1926. • Eradication of Smallpox via vaccine. (1979). • Nuclear power (1934) • The aeroplane 1902 first flight.
How has technology changed our lives? • In the past 50 years. • Video tape, CDs DVDs • Computer technology (CAM, CAD in business) • Mobile phone technology. • Commercial Satellites • Internet • Organ transplants (1964 – First heart transplant). • In the past 10 years. (2000 – present) • Broadband • Wifi / Bluetooth • MP3 • Bio fuel • Airbus • Gene therapy. • Hd TV – Digital switch over 2012.
How technology can be used in business? • 2 ways: • Development of production methods • Development of new products / services
Car Manufacturing. Ford • Model T car • Early version of ‘lean manufacturing’ – Youtube • Today’s car manufacturing equivalent - Youtube • The future of manufacturing. - Youtube • What are the main benefits to the business of using ‘modern’ methods of car manufacturing? • Operations • Finance • Marketing • Human Resources
Technology and Product Development • Currently there is a demand for cars to be ‘cleaner’ and use more environmentally friendly fuels. • The Japanese have produced the H2O car • Ariticle • How will the business benefit from producing this car? • Who else (in business or society) would also benefit? • Can you see any problems with this type of technology being used? For business or society.
Opportunities from Technological Change • Reduce costs. • savings in production mean spending can be increased elsewhere. I.e. marketing. • Streamline production and shorter lead time • Through ICT, robotics etc. • Can improve quality of product / service. • Robots / computers can be more precise than humans and carry out repetitive actions constantly without becoming tired. • Allows business to be more competitive. • Combination of above.
Benefitting from Future Technology • Take a business of your own choosing and think about what ‘future’ technology it may decide to use. • Explain how that technology would be used. • I.e. production methods, integration into final product, use as a raw material etc. • Explain how the business would directly benefit from the use of the ‘new’ technology. • E.g. • Operations Efficiency legislation requirements • Marketing and Sales (Competition, Market Share, Image) • Human Resources (staffing) • Finance (Costs) etc
Are Advancements in Technology Beneficial to All? • Employees • Businesses • Governments • Society
Drawbacks of Technology. • Research – can be costly and time consuming. • Technology implemented may not be successful. • HDVD and Blue-Ray. • Lead to ‘battles’ for standardisation in the market. • New technology may lead to unemployment. • Retraining of employees to be able to ‘use’ technology. • Time consuming and expensive. • The decision to implement technology now or wait a while • Technology is always advancing. Expensive systems can soon become outdated. • Not all technologies are beneficial to all stakeholders. • Eco friendly cars will mean the oil producers suffer. • Mobile technology has had a major effect on BT. • Removed telephone boxes due to lack of use. Non-mobile users loose out. • Post Office closures due to email and electronic banking.
