The International Tropical Timber Organization • Intergovernmental • was created by the ITTA, 1983 • currently operates under the ITTA, 1994 • has a secretariat of 35 people based in Yokohama, Japan
The ITTO mandate Promoting sustainable development through the conservation and sustainable management, use and trade of tropical forest resources
Membership ITTO: • brings together tropical timber producers and consumers as equal partners in decision-making • currently has 59 members ITTO membership represents: • 95% of world tropical timber trade • 80% of the world’s tropical forests
Donors Financial contributions may be made by any country or organization. Main donors for project work and other activities: Japan Switzerland United States
ITTO project program • ITTO has provided grants worth almost US$300 million • more than 400 projects funded • about 150 projects currently under way • employ more than 500 local, full-time professionals in the tropics
Field action ITTO resources are used to: • implement sustainable tropical forest management • train the forest, industry and conservation workforces • develop conservation reserves • promote conservation of endangered forest ecosystems, including mangroves • improve trade transparency • promote a sustainable tropical timber trade

Implementation: field projects • Previous experience: eg projects in Colombia, India have been able to influence national policies on mangrove conservation and management • several have made important contributions to local community development
Implementation: field projects • Since 2002, ITTO has financed 13 new mangrove field projects – in Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Rep. Congo, Togo, China, Indonesia, Japan, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela • More in the pipeline – producers and consumers recognize importance of mangrove conservation and management
