What are the characteristics of this approach? • It’s a system that views the individual as a product of unconscious forces. • Freud pursued a theory of treatment to help patients bring traumatic memories and their accompanying affect into consciousness in ways that would allow them to form associative connection with other conscious thoughts and achieve expression. • Developed a theory that was centered around sexual and aggressive impulses hidden in our unconscious from early childhood. • These impulses live below the surface of our conscious and control our behavior that we’re unaware of. • Currently unconscious process doesn’t focus on sex and aggression but more on what kinds of perception thinking and memory that goes on below our level of awareness and without our conscious control

Carl Jung • Jung proposed and developed the concepts of extraversion and introversion; archetypes, and the collective unconscious. • Jung considered individuation to be the central process of human development • Created some of the best known psychological concepts including the archetype, the collective unconscious, the complex, and synchronicity. • One of the best known contemporary contributors to dream analysis and symbolization

  4. The basic tenets of psychoanalysis include the following: • 1. Besides the inherited constitution of personality, a person's development is determined by events in early childhood; • 2. Human behavior, experience, and cognition is largely influenced by irrational drives; • 3. Irrational drives are unconscious; • 4. Attempts to bring these drives into awareness meet psychological resistance in the form of defense mechanisms; • 5. Conflicts between conscious and unconscious material can result in mental disturbances such as neurosis, neurotic traits, anxiety, depression etc.; • 6. The liberation from the effects of the unconscious material is achieved through bringing this material into the conscious mind (via e.g. skilled guidance, i.e. therapeutic intervention).

How does this approach look at behavior? • Psychoanalysis believe that our actions are an indication of conflict in our unconscious mind. • By doing these actions it allows our unconscious desire to surface. • For example, an individual's vulnerabilities, motives, tensions, impulses, guilt, fantasies, or urges.
