What is sexual harassment? • Harassment: any unwanted comment, gesture, or action that is sexual in nature • Assault: physical contact without consent • Sexual assault: sexual contact without consent. Covers range of behaviour, from touching to rape
3 Characteristics • Behaviour is unwanted or unwelcomed • Sexual in nature or relates to gender of individual • Focused on the impact, not the intent
Statistics • Need to be careful with interpretation of statistics • Many sexual assaults go unreported • 1500 students surveyed in 18 schools: 57% were harassed within last 2 weeks • 55% of male students and 32% of female students did not care
Canadian Statistics • Ontario schools: 70% of students reported being sexually harassed • Alberta schools: 80% claimed they had never been harassed • FHS: 40% experienced and 50% witnessed • Dances were mentioned as especially troublesome
Harassed Students • Report feeling: more self conscious, embarrassed, afraid, less confident, and more doubtful about having a positive romantic relationship in the future. • School performance has also been found to decrease

Social media • Research has shown that high levels of Facebook intrusion can spill over into romantic relationships, causing jealousy and dissatisfaction • Facebook use predicted Facebook-related jealously, more so than personality and relationship factors
Social Media • Facebook is a easily accessible communication medium with an infinite number of 3rd party threats • Facebook intrusion may turn into hypervigilance for relationship threats, jealously, and surveillance behaviours
Social Media • Facebook is an environment that promotes jealous feelings and jealous behaviour • Some participants met criteria for behavioural addiction, based on the amount of time they were spending on Facebook (45 hrs/wk) • Is it possible to be addicted to Facebook?
