“Percentage of” How many people are in this classroom today? What percentage of them are female? What percentage of them are male?
“Percentage of” If there are 1100 people who are admitted to DePaul, but only 17% decide to enroll, how many people decided to enroll? Of the 1100 people admitted, 17% of those or 187 people decided to enroll.
“Percentage Increase” We have 23 people in this classroom. What if we increased it by 5 people? What percent of 23 is 5 people? 5/23 = .222 or 22.2% Okay, so we increased our population by 22.2 percent. We can also take the difference divided by the original number. (28-23)/23 = .222 or 22.2%
“Percentage Increase / Decrease” Percentage Increase: Our weightlifter friend has 550 pounds on the bar (including the weight of the bar). He increases this by 5 pounds. By what percent has he increased the weight by? (555-550) / 550 = 0.00909 or 0.91%
“Percentage Increase / Decrease” Percentage Decrease: He’s doing a workout where at some point he decreases his weight by 20% between sets. If he starts by using 555 pounds in one set, how much weight will he lift during the next set? 555*(1-.2) = 444pounds
“Percent more / less than” Let’s say the Bears have 21 points while the Packers have 14. The Bears have 7 more points, but what percentage is their score more than the Packers? The value after the phrase “more than” indicates the reference value.
