EMIRAD Data coSMOS2 campaign
coSMOS2 campaign objectives • Validation of SMOS SM L2 prototype processor • Assimilation of root zone moisture • Investigation into the effect of water interception and dew on radiometry • Investigation into the effect of sun glint over vegetation on radiometry • Investigation into scaling between different pixel sizes • Investigation into the effect of topography on radiometry
instrument • EMIRAD L-band radiometer (TUD) on board SERA aircraft (ARA) • 1 antenna (horn) @ nadir, the other @ 40° • Nadir horn has 680 m footprint for 1000 m flight altitude • 40 deg horn has 714 m footprint across track and 932 m footprint along track for 1000 m flight altitude. • Same calibration over lake as PLMR
flight patterns • ASSI: assimilation over all SM stations • SCAL: scaling over Krui + Merriwa catchments • 36 1km spaced parallel lines @ 1830 m (1250 m resolution) • WATER: dew effect only • GLINT: large range of sun-horn geometry
ASSI flight pattern • Fly over all farm sites @ 500 m • Providing data @ 300 m resolution • 5km lines
1 km separation trees grassland GLINT flight pattern • 2 flight lines (at least 5km long) in the same azimuth as the sun’s position when the sun has an elevation of 40 degrees. • 6 “dive flights” to increase obs angle range • 4+4+3 lines; 7:30-10:00
WATER flight pattern • Initially scheduled over Ilogan + Roscommon • Flown over Cullingral + Midlothian to take profit of extended vegetation sampling • 1 line flown 23 times from 5:50 AM till 10:10
Flight calendar 4 lines 22 lines
Data processing • TUD+ESA busy with OS campaign • First Tb maps produced by the end of this month • See poster by M. Berger @ EGU
ESA Data • Envisat - MERIS: MERIS full resolution (300m), geolocated and calibrated TOA radiance (300m) • Envisat - ASAR: Alternating Polarisation Mode Product - two coregistered images HH/VV - 30m spatial resolution • Envisat AATSR: calibrated and geolocated images of brightness temperature (for the three infra-red channels) or reflectance (for the near-visible and visible channels), together with cloud and land identification • CHRIS/PROBA: Mode 1 data: set of 5 images acquired under different angular views, 62 spectral bands in VIS/NIR - about 34m spatial resolution.
