Welcome EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR THE L. E. RADER CENTER (LERC)
Student Traits • Age approx. 14 to 18.5 • History of academic failure • Grade retention • Chronic truancy • Suspensions • Poor academic Skills • High percentage of Special Education about 30% • Non-traditional learners • Length of stay - one to two years, some longer
Student Needs • Active learning • Varied instructional strategies • Incentives for positive behavior that encourage learning • Integrated behavior management system with Rader • Full range of secondary level courses • Vocational courses (minimum of two) • Address transition needs of students
Staffing (Recommended class size of 10) • Administrator on site • Special education teachers • Core content teachers • Vocational teachers • Support staff • Library staff
Length of School Year and Instructional Time • School year 12 months with breaks; minimum of 210 instructional days • Academic day must comply with state law • May use block schedule or other alternative schedule • Current schedule allows for Wed. afternoon meeting with Rader Unit Treatment Teams
Curriculum • Compatible with PASS • Provide courses required to attain a high school diploma • GED preparation curriculum suggested • Vocational curriculum • Reading curriculum suggested • Challenging, meaningful and interesting
Training • All teachers new to Rader must complete 40 hours training prior to working with students with additional training that must be completed during the year
