All healthcare staff at NMCP are MANDATED REPORTERS!!! This means we are responsible for assessing if a patient is a victim of abuse or neglect. We are MANDATEDto report child abuse and neglect. We are also MANDATEDto report cases of domestic violence with imminent danger.
ABUSE STATISTICS • 1.5 million women are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the U.S. ( Incidents of abuse reach 5 million annually) • 25% of all women seeking care in the ER for any reason are victims of domestic violence. • 3.2 million child abuse referrals are made to CPS involving 5.8 million children annually.
COMMUNICATION STATISTICS • Less than 33% of women exposed to domestic violence have discussed this with their healthcare provider. • During these discussions, the victim was 4 to 5 times more likely than the healthcare provider to raise the subject of violence or abuse.
Reporting Statistics for NMCPJANUARY 2009-OCTOBER 2009 • 77 Total reports from over 100 clinics (ER-43 Reports, SW-18 Reports, All Others-15 Reports) • 8 clinics reported • 41 reports of child abuse • 36 reports of domestic violence
ASK THE QUESTION! • Be Specific • Are you or any of your family members being physically or emotionally abused? • If Yes, Ask… • Do you feel that you or your family members are in imminent danger? • Are you afraid to go home?
If there is imminent danger, contact the Social Work Department during working hours (0800-1630) @ 953-5861, or after hours call the duty pager @ 314-8715 for assistance and complete a CPS and/or Family Advocacy Report using CANAREES. • If there is no imminent danger, complete a CPS and/or Family Advocacy Report using CANAREES.
CANAREES PURPOSE: • To effectively coordinate victim and perpetrator information between NMCP, local government and state agencies. • To provide various support services to those affected by abuse.

To utilizeCANAREESdouble click on the icon and log-in. Your Username and Password depends on your specific work space. A reference list is provided on the log-in page. CANAREESDOES NOTelectronically SUBMIT the report. You must CALL CPS,PRINTthe CANAREES report, and FAX it to FAP (do not fax the report to CPS) .
Open reports will be deleted after 24 hours. Once reports are completed, they cannot be reopened. If a report needs to be reprinted, or for general assistance utilizing CANAREES please contact the Social Work Department during normal work hours. Refer to NAVMEDCENPTSVA 5800.15A
CANAREES CAN: • Help keep victims safe by providing them with various supportive services. • Prevent further instances of domestic violence and child abuse. • Provide valuable data to identify child abuse and domestic violence trends at NMCP and develop future programs. • Keep providers safe from fines, license suspensions, misdemeanor charges, and imprisonment.
