Pink Floyd Any Color You Like! All statements here represent only the personal opinion of Eugene V. Bobukh who brought this presentation to you
My Relation to Pink Floyd • Big fan in 1991 – 1999 • Used to keep several albums in memory and “listen” to them during boring 2-day Novosibirsk-Moscow train rides. • I am not an expert • Never deeply interested in people behind the band • My musical judgments are subjective • Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Floyd if interested • This whole “lecture” barely scratches the surface – you can’t represent PF with just 8 songs.
PF History In One Page • Inception: ≈1963 • First studio album: 1967 • Last studio album so far: 1994 • Latest concert so far: 2011
Four Major Pink Floyd “Eras” • “Early”: 1967 - ≈1970 • “Classic”: ≈ 1970 – 1975 • “Late”: 1977 – 1983 • “Renaissance”: 1987 -1994 Yes, I do love charts
Early Era 1967 - 1970 • Characterized by • Mix of styles – the band is obviously still in search • Not a party music! Hard psychedelics, bold sound experiments… • …interleaved with short rhythm & blues songs, some very pleasant • Mostly introspective lyrics • Studio Albums & Notable Compositions • The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967): • ‘Astronomy Domine’, ‘Interstellar Overdrive’ • A Saucerful of Secrets (1968): • ‘Let There Be More Light’, ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’ • Soundtrack from the Film More (1969): • ‘Green Is the Colour’, ‘Cymbaline’, ‘Main Theme’, ‘Dramatic Theme’, ‘Cirrus Minor’ • For Andrey only: ‘Quicksilver’ or ‘Up The Khyber’ • Ummagumma(1969): • ‘Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict’, ‘The Narrow Way’, ‘Careful with That Axe Eugene’ • ZabriskiePoint (1970): “...Обычный саундтрек. Можешь считать, если «Мор» слышал, то её тоже слышал. Типичные Пинки – саксофон, синтезатор...” • Relics (1970) [compilation of early songs and singles]: • ‘Julia Dream’, ‘Biding My Time’
Classic Style 1970 -1975 • Characterized by • Deeply symphonic, “monumental” compositions • Perfect sound • Shift to “monolithic” albums – one story from start to the end • Can’t really tear a song out and appreciate it • This is what most people recognize as “Pink Floyd” style • Some psychedelics, but transitioning away from it • Studio Albums & Notable Compositions • Atom Heart Mother (1970): • ‘Atom Heart Mother’, ‘Summer ’68’ • Meddle (1971): • ‘Echoes’, ‘One of These Days’ • Obscured by Clouds (1972): • ‘Mudmen’ • The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) -- all album, but in particular • ‘Time’, ‘Money’ • Wish You Were Here (1975): -- all album, but in particular • ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ as probably the best and the most recognized tune of PF ever
Late 1977 - 1983 • Characterized by • Strong shift to rock • Socially loaded lyrics • Growing drama • Very “monolithic” albums • Studio Albums & Notable Compositions • Animals (1977): • ‘Sheep’ (though the whole album is very uniform) • The Wall (1979): • ‘Another Brick in The Wall’ (P2 is ‘We Don’t Need No Education’), ‘Empty Spaces’, ‘Is There Anybody Out There’, ‘Nobody Home’, ‘Comfortably Numb’ • The Final Cut (1983): • ‘The Gunner's Dream’ • Disbanded between 1983 and 1987
‘Renaissance’ 1987 - 1994 • Characterized by • Softer music – could be used as party background or chill-out • Partial return to the “classic” style • Some social themes in lyrics • Studio Albums & Notable Compositions • A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987): • ‘Learning to Fly’, ‘The Dogs of War’, ‘On the Turning Away’ • The Division Bell (1994): • ‘What Do You Want From Me’, ‘Marooned’, ‘High Hopes’
