A FAITH WORTH HAVING “By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter” (Heb. 11:24).
“This” Faith • What does it take to turn your back on all that the world values? • Riches, luxury, indulgence in the richest country of antiquity. • And accept a life of hardship where you aren’t valued even by your own people? • He trusted the wisdom and power of God. • So must we learn this as the source of faith.
A Maturing Faith • “When he was come to years”. • His faith might begin with his parents, v. 23. • They ran a great risk by disobeying Pharaoh’s orders. God’s overseeing hand was involved in Moses’ survival. • Moses young adulthood – Acts 7:22 • All this was laid out for him by others. • He knew “the way of faith”, but he was also an Egyptian.
When did he come to the moment of decision? Were there several? • He chose to defend an Israelite – “His people”, or just a sense of justice. • Our moment of decision probably won’t be as dramatic, but it must come. • Faith is defined by our choices. But we need time to mature.
Faith Learns to Choose • So many influences in each of our lives. • Spiritual, material, family, friends, “the world”. • For Moses, ruler or slave, right or wrong. So many considerations. • “The reproach of Christ”. There was a spiritual consideration, perhaps communicated by God. • “Refused” indicated a measured choice. • There is a reward for choosing the right – “the recompense of reward.”
A Faith That Leads To Action • By faith he forsook Egypt. He had reached a “point of no return” • One action leads to a marked change in life. • From a worldly perspective, Moses had ruined his life. From a spiritual perspective, he was just beginning. • “Not fearing the wrath of the king.” • Some become Christians at great expense (David and Sandy). • But Moses’ reward isn’t immediate.
A Faith That Suffers Hardship • Difficulty can increase our faith or destroy it. Again, the choice must be made, and it is ours. • Misunderstanding, slander, loneliness, disloyalty from family and millions of “followers”. • “He endured as seeing Him who is invisible.” • Moses became a standard of measurement for faith. That’s why he is in Heb. 11.
A Faith That Triumphs • From Mount Nebo where he is buried by God to the mount of transfiguration where he visits the Christ. What a journey! • The man who wasted his opportunity and life demonstrates to us today how God can change us and use us, and glorify us. • This faith always leads to triumph.
