Narrative stance of Nick • Nick claims to be telling the whole truth and make his account sound more reliable than other sources: “I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known”
Although he makes it out that he is a reliable source, in actual fact he passes judgement on others, gets drunk and gives hazy second hand accounts of events, past and present, losing track of time: “it was nine o’clock – almost immediately afterward I looked at my watch and found it was ten.”
Examples of Nick being an unreliable narrator • This following example shows how Nick is an unreliable narrator and how he is giving false impressions of himself and how he is obsessed with millionaires which blurs his vision to see what horrible people most of them actually were • “Reading over what I have written so far, I see I have given the impression that the events of three nights several weeks apart were all that absorbed me.”
Hypocritical about women • He is hypocritical about how he treats women • “I had a short affair with a girl who lived in Jersey City” • “I had to get myself out of that tangle back home”
