When is Maha Navmi 2024? Maha Navmi 2024 is on 11th October, 2024. The Navami tithi begins from 12:06 PM on 11th October, 2024 and will end at 10:58 AM on 12th October, 2024. Significance of Nine Avatars of Goddess Durga The nine days and nights of Navratri celebrate the nine different avatars of Goddess Durga.
Day 1: Shailputri On the first day of Navratri, Goddess Shailputri is worshipped. ‘Shail’ means mountain and ‘putri’ means daughter; basically one who is the daughter of mountains is called Goddess Shailputri. She is also referred to as Hemwati, Parvati, Bhavani and Sati. Goddess Shailputri is represented with a lotus in left hand, ‘Trishul’ or trident in the right hand, crescent moon on the forehead and rides on Nandi bull. Day 2: Brahmacharini On the second day, Goddess Brahmacharini is worshipped. She symbolizes penance because Brahmacharini means a female who practices Brahmacharya. She carries Kamandalu in her left hand, Japa mala in right hand and walks barefoot. Devotees should wear white colored clothes as it symbolizes her purity, sacredness and inner peace.
Day 3: Chandraghanta The third day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Chandraghanta. Chandra means moon. Goddess Chandraghanta adorns a bell on her forehead that appears like a half moon. She wore a half moon after marrying Lord Shiva. Her four left hands hold sword, Gada, Kamadalu and Trishul. The fifth hand is in Varada Mudra pose. Her right hands hold a Japa Mala, dhanush, arrow and lotus. Her fifth right hand is in Abhaya Mudra pose. • Day 4: Kushmanda The fourth day is dedicated to Goddess Kushmanda. Mata Kushmanda represents the power to live and survive in difficult conditions. She is also known as Ashtabhuja Devi as she has eight hands. Each of the hands holds different elements such as bow, arrow, mace, sword, hook, two jars of blood and honey, discus and trident. She rides on the tiger and blesses the devotees with one hand in Abhaya Mudra.
Day 5: Skandamata The fifth day of Navratri is dedicated to Skanda Mata. She was the mother of Skanda (Kartikey) who was the war God. She is portrayed as riding on a ferocious lion with infant Lord Kartikey in her lap. She is also known as the Goddess of Fire. She has four hands wherein there is a lotus flower in the upper two hands, the child form of Lord Kartikey in one hand and the other hand in Abhaya Mudra. She sits on lotus flower and hence is referred as Padmasani. Day 6: Katyayani Katyayani or Mahalaxmi is the sixth form of Goddess Durga. She took birth to kill Mahishasura. Her persona includes vengeance, anger and an urge to kill the evils. Devotees should wear green clothes for new beginnings and attract growth in life.
Day 7: Kalaratri A presentation is a formal or informal communication process where information, ideas, concepts, or arguments are conveyed to an audience. Presentations can take various forms, including verbal speeches, visual displays (such as slides or posters), demonstrations, or performances. Day 8: Mahagauri Day 8th or Ashtami is dedicated to Maa Mahagauri. She is the Goddess of peace, endurance, cleanliness and purity. She has four hands wherein she holds a trident in the lower right hand. The lower left hand blesses devotees and the upper left arm holds a tambourine.
Day 9: Siddhidatri The last and ninth form of Goddess Durga is Goddess Siddhidatri. She has natural healing powers and she resides on the lotus or lion or tiger in an enchanting, happy and blissful pose. She holds Chakra in one hand and Gada in another hand. The other two hands hold a Shankha and lotus flower. Devotees should wear peacock green colored outfits to manifest integrity and grace.
