  6. Why do a Needs Assessment?

  7. Ask Questions • Who is affected by the situation? • How are they affected? • What strategy is proposed? • Why is it believed to be the best approach? • What would happen without the proposed intervention?

  8. Gather Information This step provides quantitative data to validate the answers to the questions. Assessment Methods: Observation Interviews Focus Groups Surveys/Other Assessments Population Data Others Assessment Data Sources: Census Bureau Planning Office Police Departments Schools Health and Social Services Hospitals and Clinics Housing Authorities Others

  9. Identify Strengths Strengths include individuals, families, programs, and facilities, as well as financial resources and other ways to support your concept. Look for: Vision, values and hopes, possibilities, talents, prior experience, community connections, Strengths are a key component that supports sustainability and community-buy-in.

  10. Identify Gaps • The difference between the current condition and the desired outcome. • What IS • What SHOULD BE • It is critical for assuring the proposed project is the best strategy to meet a specific need. • Gap analysis will help frame the strategy

  11. Analyze the Information • Mapping Resources • Describe the community in numbers; population and geography • Narrow the focus; be specific about who the program will serve • Be sure to include community perceptions • What strategies have others tried already?

  12. Needs Assessment Reminders • Don’t try to reinvent the wheel • Ask for help • Decide when you will stop gathering data • Creates a baseline for comparison as project progresses
