  1. Newton’s 1st Law INERTIA

  2. Newton’s First Law: INERTIA • An object at rest will stay at rest, • an object in motion will stay in motion, • an object moving in a straight line will continue moving in a straight line, • unless acted upon by an outside net force.

  3. If a block that had been sitting on a table moves, • look for a net force that caused it to change.

  4. If a block that had been traveling in a straight line changes its direction, • look for a net force that caused it to change.

  5. If a satellite does not travel in the same direction and at the same speed for all eternity, • look for a net force that caused it to change.

  6. Conversely, if an object is not changing, • there is no net force acting on it.

  7. Net force is not the same as force. • An object can have zero net force if there are no forces acting on it. • An object can also have zero net force if all of the forces acting on it cancel each other out.

  8. Forces have direction. • Therefore, force is a vector quantity. • It has both magnitude and direction. • What are some other vector quantities? • Name some scalar quantities.

  9. INERTIA • won’t change unless it is forced to change • stubborn • Make me!

  10. Inertia and mass are the same thing.

  11. Inertia and mass are the same thing. • The more inertia an object has the more force it will need to change its motion (or lack of motion). • So, are force and inertia directly proportional or inversely proportional?

  12. Inertia and mass are the same thing. • The more mass an object has the more force it will need to change its motion (or lack of motion). • So, are force and mass directly proportional or inversely proportional?

  13. Inertia and mass are both measured in kilograms in the SI (metric) system. • kilograms kg

  14. CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING • A heavy plate is sitting on top of a table that is covered with a smooth tablecloth. You grab the ends of the tablecloth and pull very quickly. The heavy plate barely moves. Why?

  15. CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING • A rocket ship in space fires a probe into empty space where there are no other forces. Will the probe slow down? Will the probe speed up? Will the probe change direction? Why?

  16. CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING • A girl is skateboarding but she has to keep pushing on the ground in order to keep moving at the same speed. Why?

  17. FRICTION • Friction is a force. • Friction always acts opposite to the direction that the object is moving (or wants to move). • Friction always works to slow an object down. • What would happen if the force of friction could speed an object up? • NO MORE ENERGY CRISIS!

  18. Friction is an electromagnetic force. • (Just thought you wanted to know that.)
