Agenda • What is RtI? • Core versus Intervention • Intervention resources
Core versus Intervention What is best practice for core instruction? What is the difference between core instruction and intervention? What is best practice for intervention?
Critical Features of Effective Instruction • Provide high-quality constructive learning experiences—5E model, for example • Provide mathematically rigorous learning experiences • Move between concrete, pictorial, and abstract at all levels of curriculum • Emphasize real-world problem solving • Incorporate frequent formative and summative assessment
Best Practice for Intervention • Assess for need • Focus on number sense—rational number attributes and operations • Provide direct, systematic, and explicit instruction • Use Concrete-Representational-Abstract sequencing • Give appropriate attention to procedural fluency (facts and algorithms) • Be consistent • Address motivation and productive disposition
Intervention • Determine when you will do this intervention • Choose your groups—homogeneous, strategic • Plan the intervention schedule • Prepare the materials • Pretest (optional) • 5-10 minutes fluency, ~20 minutes lesson • Progress monitor • Posttest
