The Game Flat Track Roller Derby • Games consist of two 30 minute periods. • Each period consists of a series of 2 minute jams. • For each jam there will be a “pack” and a jammer from each team on the track. A pivot and 3 blockers from each team make up the packs. Then a jammer from each team scores the points. • The basic object of the game is for the blockers in the pack to assist their jammer through the pack so she can score, as well as stopping the opposing jammer from getting through the pack so she can NOT score. This is done by driving her out of bounds, knocking her out of bounds or knocking her down! • Roller Derby utilizes both offense and defense at the same time in any given jam.
The Game Jammer • Signified by the star on her helmet cover, the Jammer is the fast furious skater of our sport. The main job of the Jammer is to score points, so she needs to be quick, agile and tough enough to outsmart and outskate the opposing team members because they all want to take her out! • After her first initial pass through the pack she is eligible to begin scoring. She scores 1 point for every opposing team member she passes on each run through the pack.
The Game Pivot • Signified by the Stripe on her helmet cover, the pivot is the multi-tasker of the pack. She is a blocker, a pack leader and can also receive a “star pass” from the jammer, which then turns her into the jammer. • Her job is to make sure her pack is protecting and assisting their jammer through the pack while stopping the opposing jammer from scoring….ALL AT THE SAME TIME!
The Game Blockers • There are 3 blockers in the pack with a Pivot, they have no helmet covers and play both offense and defense at the same time. • Blockers have excellent multi-tasking skills, their job is to stop the opposing jammer from scoring as well as assist their jammer through the pack so she can score, often times this is all happening at once!
