  4. Fakulti Kejuruteraan Elektrik To repeat something written or spoken using different words, often in a humorous form or in a simpler and shorter form that makes the original meaning clearer (Cambridge Dictionaries Online) What is plagiarism Is paraphrasing considered plagiarism? Yes it is still considered plagiarism if there are to many word-for-word phrases • In paraphrasing, use your own words – only technical words can be repeated. • YOU STILL NEED TO CITE YOUR SOURCE.

  5. Fakulti Kejuruteraan Elektrik What is plagiarism There is no need to cite “common knowledge” “current flowing through a resistor will generate heat due to i2R losses” … is a common knowledge “current flowing through a resistor will generate heat as well as emit electromagnetic radiation that can cause cancer” … is NOT a common knowledge

  6. Fakulti Kejuruteraan Elektrik How to avoid PLAGIARISM? Use citation when you use someone else’s ideas, opinions or theories Use citation when you paraphrase someone else’s written or spoken words Use citation whenever in doubt Use you own ideas and phrases – this requires a thorough understanding on the subject

  7. Fakulti Kejuruteraan Elektrik PLAGIARISM in MEP1422 Is increasingly being practiced by students in their assignments Common form of plagiarism found are: Paraphrasing (or even word-for-word copying) from papers, books, or internet without proper citation Word-for word copying from other students of different groups (or previous students) – this is not allowed even with permission and citation Copying diagrams without proper citation Copying simulation results – e.g it is not normal to come up with the same values when designing controllers

  8. Fakulti Kejuruteraan Elektrik CONCLUSION Use your own ideas and words – after all a university is a place where you learn to be creative, expand your knowledge, develop your writing skills and do your research
