  1. Figure 21–1 A CATV network is similar to a roadway divided into three lanes, one lane for each type of vehicle: car, truck, bus.

  2. Figure 21–2 The distribution points connect to the headend using a star network topology. The cable modems form a tree network topology back to the distribution points. The term HFC refers to a hybrid fiber/coax distribution system.

  3. Figure 21–3 A downstream signal refers to the channel traveling from the CMTS residing at the headend to the cable modem—root to leaf. The upstream signal refers to the channel traveling from the cable modem to the CMTS.

  4. Figure 21–4 The CMTS connects to the supernet to carry traffic outside the CATV network.

  5. Figure 21–5 Voice over IP calls travel across the broadband network provided by the CATV service provider. A Media Gateway Controller directs the call flow to the Media Gateway where it travels on a trunk connected to a PSTN switch. From the PSTN switch, the call travels to the terminating telephone.

  6. Figure 21–6 The cable box located at the customer’s premises connects to the outside CATV network via coaxial cable. The television connects to the cable box through coaxial cable. The cable modem and ATA are integrated into the cable box. An RJ-45 jack connects broadband service to the computing device, and a standard RJ-11 jack connects to an analog telephone set.
