  2. McCormick Reaper • 1834 invented by Cyrus McCormick • Allowed for farmers to harvest grain 7 times faster than by using older methods

  3. Samuel Morse • Invented the Telegraph and an entire system to help with communication (Morse Code)

  4. Cholera Epidemic of 1832 • 1st national health epidemic • Ran along transportation roots of the 1830’s

  5. Hydropathy • Popular Health Movement of the 19th century that said illness could be cured by submerging yourself for long periods of time in water.

  6. Phrenology • Belief that the brain had 37 different “faculties” that were responsible for different functions • Also, each part of the brain could lead to differences in skull development • You could tell a lot about a person by their head size

Discussion Question #1 • Agricultural Advances in the 1830’s led to time-saving, labor-saving methods in regards to farming • Wheat became the dominant crop of the mid-west (cotton in the south) • John Deere=Steel Tipped Plow • Cyrus McCormick=Reaper • These breakthroughs would help the North and West during the Civil War maintain agricultural production despite low numbers of laborers

Discussion Question #2 • The railroad would change American transportation and travel • Early Railroads=Difficult ride, sparks, no brakes, no lights, scheduling difficulties • 1840-1860-Railroad changes=3,000-30,000 miles of track, coaches replaced open cars, lamps made night travel possible, telegraph made communication between stations easier (sleeping accommodations, schedules issue’s (problems still in existence)) • Drastically changed the U.S. landscape (cities grew, towns grew in importance)

Discussion Question #3 • Industry and Technology benefitted the consumer • Price went down during 19th century (mass production) • Steam Engines would eliminate problems caused by water (freezing) as the power source • Industry led to the growth of Towns and Cities • Led to an increase in Child Labor • More Women going into the workforce
