My Goals Provide tools to be: • An informed, critical thinking consumer • Able to identify when you are eating well and……when you are not! • Able to recognize when nutrition info is reliable and……. when it is not!
About Me • LA native transplanted to Gilroy • PhD in Nutrition & Food Science (UCLA, UCD), Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) • Employment: De Anza and Apple, Inc.-Wellness • Fun=hikingand growing-cooking- eating-learning about food, especially if with family and my -->
Meet One Another • Exchange contact information with 2 classmates. • Form groups of 3-4. Answer following on card provided. • List full name of each person.. Last name first • Birth country, languages spoken besides English • Do you take supplements (vits, mins, protein, etc.)? • Identify a food intake habit you need to change.
Attendance • If you want to add the class, take an add code and sign your name. • I will not offer add codes after Wednesday.

So, what do you know? T/F 1. Vitamins make people energetic. 2. High Fructose Corn Syrup causes weight gain. 3. Avocado, olives and nuts are cholesterol free. 4. Most of our daily calories are spent on physical activity. 5. Muscle is primarily water by weight. 6. Sugar has more calories/gram than protein. 7. The #1 cause of vitamin toxicity is supplement abuse. 8. Special diets can prevent/cure cancer.

Calories. Evil or Necessary? Absolutely, positively vital for life!! Calories (kilocalories) = energy Calorie--Unit of measurement of energy content of an organic fuel (butter, sugar, gasoline, wood!) They are not really good or bad.
