Began as a Proprietary Colony where James Oglethrope was the proprieter James reported back to the council of trustees so that they knew exactly how Georgia was running. Government
Royal Colony • In 1752 England saw some “financial issues” and transformed Georgia into a royal colony. • This changed there economy into slavery. • The governor Was then William Ewen.
Economy • Georgia was the only colony that received financial aid by a vote of Parliament from the British government. • Crops were traded for items that couldn't be produced on the plantations such as shoes, lace, thread, etc. • Some jobs available were blacksmiths, tailors, and farmers.
Culture • Divorce wasn't allowed, although this didn't stop women from escaping by running away. • Women had the role of making clothes and cooking meals and being a so called “true housekeeper”. • Children had many chores and there were no schools.
Culture (continued) • Prohibited slavery and liquor. • Georgia was known as the “melting pot” because of the large diversity in backgrounds. • All religions were accepted except for Roman Catholic.
