Unfortunately… he was not to be either
Unfortunately, he was not to be either They can’t all be angels!
Eventually, she would rule England as … Mary I.. Or Bloody Mary
Henry came to believe that God had cursed his marriage to Catherine and that a suitable heir (male) might never be born to the union.
In the meantime.. Henry met Anne Boleyn, a lady-in- waiting to Catherine.
Although still married to Catherine Henry began an affair with Anne
At first, Henry was satisfied to have Anne strictly as a lover
Anne convinced him that she could give him what Catherine could not…lots of healthy babies!
Although Henry cared for Catherine, he decided to divorce her and marry Anne so that a son would inherit his throne to provide a strong monarch for England.
That was not going to be easy since Catherine was the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella, King and Queen of Spain.
Yup… that’s the same couple that financed Columbus’ voyages!
Afraid of making her powerful family angry, the Pope refused to grant Henry a divorce from Catherine!
Unable to get a divorce, Henry broke away from the Catholic Church and formed his own church.
He was made head of the new church (The Church of England) and had his marriage to Catherine annulled.
The People in England hated Anne and the marriage was a difficult one.
