URBIS ABIDJAN- WATER PROGRAM Training Activities • Training of trainers: • Theoretical and practical training of 60 youths and 20 members of the neighborhood committees (CARs) on : • Household mobilization; • Registration formalities and forms; • Efficient use of water in home; • Income generating activities linked to water. • Training of households: • Training 8,000 households on water connection and usage: • Registration formalities / properly filling out forms; • Efficient use of water / managing payment of bills; • Income generating activities and fraud prevention. • Create 4 local water network management SMEs • Technical training of the best 16 local trainers on: • - Monitoring of water networks and prevention of fraud; • Ensuring payment of bills; • Advising households on water usage.
URBIS ABIDJAN- WATER PROGRAM Lobbying and ExpectedResults • Lobbying Lobby the government’s water division and SODECI (private water company). • Results • Change subsidy policy (access requirements); • Increase subsidy funding and extend program to all slums in Abidjan; • Outsourcing SODECI activities in slums.
URBIS ABIDJAN- COTE D’IVOIRE Activity 2: SANITATION Objective: Ensure better waste collection in slums by professionalizing a major federation of pre-collectors (FEPSUCI) through capacity building.

URBIS ABIDJAN- SANITATION Training Activities Professionalize waste collection activities in slums through 3 training sessions to FEPSUCI members: • First session • Business structures/legal entities; • Fund-raising strategies. • Second session • Drafting contracts; • Financial and administrative management. • Third session • Planningand implementing pre-collection activities; • Choosing adequate equipment and “sizing” operating teams.
URBIS ABIDJAN- SANITATION Lobbying Activities and ExpectedResults Lobbying Lobby ANASUR (govt entity managing waste collection), large waste collection companies, Ministry, of Cities and Urban Salubrity, and President’s Sanitation Advisor. Results • Include pre-collection activities in public service solicitations; • Allow SMEs of pre-collectors to compete for public service solicitations and obtain contracts with the appropriate authority.
RESULTS ACHIEVED • Official launch of Urbis/Abidjan in September 2008 Activity 1: Water supply to slums • Identification and selection of all local trainers in 4 slums to teach households how to: • a) access a government subsidy to register and connect to the water network; b) more efficiently manage water and its hygienic use; c) pay bills on time to ensure sustainable access to this service. • Training of trainers. • Mobilization of households to participate in Urbis program. Activity 2: Sanitation in slums (waste collection) • Training of pre-collectors completed in business structures/legal entities, fund-raising strategies, drafting contracts, and financial and administrative management.
