  3. Les Accents • French uses accents and spelling marks that do not exist in English. These marks are part of the spelling and cannot be left out. • In French there are four accents that may appear on vowels.

  5. l’accent grave (è) • Michèle • Hélène • Thérèse • Inès Unlike Spanish words, French words can have more than one accent.

  7. le tréma (ë) • Noëlle • Joëlle • Aïcha • Zaïna These are all girls names, common in different French-speaking countries.

  8. la cédille (ç) • Français • Comment çava? • un garçon ç To form the cédille, make a 5, without the top on it.

  9. Remember: • It is important to practice pronunciation. • Accents are part of the spelling of a word. • You can’t leave them out.
