A little about me… I am in my 5th year teaching at MBIS. I have spent most of that time here in Year 1 and spent some time in Year 4. I trained in Scotland and taught just outside of Edinburgh in a P2 class, and also worked in Shanghai. I love Art and enjoy travelling. I’m engaged and getting married next August.

English – main areas of learning • Phonics – Jolly Phonics and reading books. • Poetry – pattern, rhythm, rhyme, performance. • Fiction – traditional tales, stories: familiar setting, other cultures, fantasy and patterned language. • Non-fiction – labels and captions, information texts, instructions, recounts.
Mathematics – main areas of learning • Counting and using numbers to 100. • Counting in 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. • Addition and Subtraction • Shape (2D and 3D) • Time (o’clock, half past, days, months) • Measures (weight, length, capacity) • Money • Number bonds

How to help your child with home learning • Establish a routine with your child: a set time and place for home learning to be done • Check what tasks have been set and that your child understands what needs to be done • Encourage independence: facilitate not dominate!
Expectations In Year 1, the children will be encouraged to: • Further develop their ability to work independently (scissors, pencil grip) • Take care of their personal belongings and those of others. • Dress themselves and maintain good levels of personal hygiene. • Keep the class “Golden Rules”
Reward systems • In Year 1 we have Golden Time • Prize Box • House system – contributing to team success
