An Introduction to the Course… Goals: An appreciation of the need for empirical research in CS Knowledge of empirical research methods Statistical tools Topics include: The process of science (hypothesizing, experimenting, hypothesizing, ... ) Experiment design Descriptive statistics Inferential statistics – hypothesis testing
Procedures • Lectures about selected topics • Take notes, not everything will be on slides! • Verbal, board – will be in exam! • Many students who covered only the slides failed the exam • Please feel free to raise questions, and to be critical • Weekly Tirgul • Eyal Shnarch • Homework assignments (~4): %20 of grade. • Final exam: 80% of grade. • Participate in a CS experiment (must attend to pass course) • Course web site: http://www.cs.biu.ac.il/~89-362 • Presentations will be there • Also readings, homework, notes, ...
Homework assignments • Thought questions • Math/statistical • Computing statistics with Excel • Deadlines are real. • You will lose points for being late. • After a week, it’s just too late. • Individual submission • No copying, no ethical breaches
Academic Honesty A scientist has to be honest. Do not cheat. Group discussions are OK But after discussion, each writes her/his own answer. Be honest, and you will not get into trouble
