What Is Blood Pressure? • Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of the artery. • Measured in millimeters of Mercury (mm Hg) • Measured as systolic pressure over diastolic pressure. • Systolic=pressure as heart beats. • Diastolic=pressure between heart beats.
Risk Factors • Smoking • Diabetes • Obesity • Excessive alcohol intake • Black race • Hypertension as a child • Male gender • Diastolic pressure > 115 mm Hg
Symptoms • Often asymptomatic: • Headaches • Dizzy spells • Changes in vision • Leg cramps • Chest pains
Prevention & Management Prevention Management • Maintain a normal weight. • Lower sodium intake. • Exercise regularly. • Limit alcohol intake. • Lower sodium intake to less than 1500 mg per day. • Consume more potassium, magnesium, and calcium. • Quit smoking. • Take medications as prescribed.
