Essay / Report Tasks (1) • Observation/exploration of real life case(s) After reading a book, watching a movie, shopping, taking up a summer job, a class debate, etc. Indicate sources and date 2. How to authenticate students’ work ? • 40 hours class time • Most of student’s work to be done in class e.g., planning, writing the report • Indicate sources • Sign off by school principal Other possible methods: • Teacher assignment of concepts to be visited • Teacher assignment of cases to be studied • Class presentation/questioning by teacher • Keeping logbooks

  14. Statistical Moderation • To iron out possible difference among schools in marking standards • Moderate SBA marks with reference to public exam results • The rank order of students determined by school will remain unchanged

  15. Other SBA Issues Support and training : • Detailed requirements, regulations, assessment criteria and guidelines • Teacher training • Visits by co-ordinators

Exemplars of Task-based Assessment Abilities assessed • to collect data/information of an economic phenomenon/issue and to give a proper description in the language of economics; • to analyse the economic phenomenon/issue identified using economic concepts/theories, together with appropriate diagrams and tools; • to present the arguments or deductions and to derive implications in a logical and systematic way; and • to discuss and evaluate arguments, proposals and policies from different perspectives and make informed judgments

Essay/Report Exemplar 1 on Minimum Wage Law • Interpretation of the minimum wage law in the demand and supply framework (b)&(c) Analysis and Implications • unemployment of low income workers will increase • workers with the lower productivity will be unemployed • firms will reduce output/shut down • investment will decrease • output of HK will decrease

  21. Essay/ReportExemplar 1 on Minimum Wage Law (d) Evaluation • evaluatethe proposal of minimum wage law / argument of protecting the interest of low income workers from different perspectives, e.g. workers, business owners, investors, HK economy, politicians
