Basic Information • Name: Othello • Author: William Shakespeare • Date of original publication: 1622 • Awards: 4 Oscar nominees (1965), 4 Golden Globe nominees (1966), San Sebastian International Film Festival winner (1966), BAFTA Award nominee (1967), National Society of Film Critics Award, USA, nominee (1967) • Title: “Othello” fitting because it is simply the name of the protagonist, who the story revolves around.

  3. Settings • The story takes place in Europe; more specifically Venice and Cyprus. • Many of the people have occupations of those in medieval times, such as knights and captains of ships (which are the only mode of transportation across the ocean) • During each change between places and times, the script doesn’t specifically say when or to where to setting changes to, therefore leaving it up to the reader to interpret where the new setting is located. Also, the script doesn’t say what the set should look like or what props should be used so the director has a lot of freedom with this play. They can really make it their own.

  4. Main Characters • Othello- a general for Venice who is from North Africa. He is judged by the color of his skin and accused of many crimes when he marries the senators daughter, Desdemona. He is a good man who truly does love his wife. He becomes overthrown with his thoughts and suspicions of Desdemona cheating on him when a friend Iago plants these thoughts in his head. • Desdemona- daughter of senator Brabantio. Is said to be the most beautiful, kind, loving and caring women that anyone has ever met. She is in love with Othello and like he, would do anything to keep their love alive. Very loyal. • Iago- the bad guy who works under Othello. His own jealousy causes him to want revenge, turning all of his close friends against each other and resulting in death as a majority.

  5. Theme and Conflict • Theme: Trustworthiness and jealousy; knowing who to trust and what to believe when you hear things. Othello’s whole life fell apart when be trusted someone who he thought he knew. His jealousy and his overthinking ended up killing his and the wife that he loved so much before all of these words became deadly. • Conflict: Iago turns his friends against each other because of his own jealousy for his friend Cassio, for the military position that he got. He turns general Othello against his wife, friends Roderigo against Cassio, and Othello against Cassio.

  6. Good vs. Evil • Protagonist: Othello because the story is based on him and overall, he is the good guy, the one who everyone cheers for. His tragic flaw is his lack of self confidence that makes him susceptible to jealousy and convincement of people doing him wrong. He is a good man who is tricked by someone that he thought he could have trusted. • Antagonist: Iago because he is the one who comes up with all of these evil plans and turns most of the characters against each other, as well as being responsible for most if not all of their deaths in the end of the play.

  7. Overall Reaction to Othello • I would recommend this play to anyone who likes some drama. This play had a lot of elements of today’s society with the gossip and rumors, especially when they turn out to be untrue. I thought this play was interesting throughout all 5 acts but, the drama really came out in the 5th act when the swords started to be drawn and everyone started stabbing each other. I think that this play tries to convey a good message about not trusting everything you hear, no matter who it comes from. Othello believed everything that Iago was telling him which ended up with him killing himself and his own wife. Jealousy can be a terrible thing but I think he went a little overboard wit the whole killing spree at the end. I think that Othello should have just talked to Desdemona before he killed her. Other than that, it was a fun read that kind of reminded me of the Bachelor.
