Overdentures Dr DV Malefane Lecturer/consultant Wits School of Oral Health Department of Prosthodontics
Lecture outline • Definition • Indications • Clinical process incl materials • Adv & disadv • Maintenance
Definition • Complete or partial removable denture supported by retained roots to improve support, stability, sensation (tactile & proprioceptive) to reduce alveolar bone resorption • Tooth supported (TSO) • & Implant supported (ISO)*removable & fixed
Indications • Excellent OH • Supporting alveolar architecture - roots with healthy alveolar bone • Location of teeth in the arch - canines & laterals (md) - canines & 1st premolars (mx) • Root structure - RCT feasable
Clinical process • Remove coronal portion to gingival margin • RCT of remaining roots • Impressions – alginate & PVS
Clinical process • Retentive elements e.g metal copings,
Advantages • Helps reduce alveolar bone resorption • Better retention, support & stability • Sensory input • Positive psychological advantage of still having teeth. • Prevents combination syndrome (Mx)
Disadvantages • Secondary caries & periodontal disease/ periimplantitis • Bulkier vs conventional denture • Frequent maintenance exams • More expensive • Failure (RCT/implant) • Time
Maintenance • OH(NB!!!!!!) • OH • OH • Retentive elements maintained/replaced
End Thank you!!!
