  7. Flattening efficiency curves for Brayton cycle based engines necessitates new modes of combustion to lower sfc. After a decade of research and technology development, pressure gain combustion looks promising for both propulsion and energy applications. Individual facets of pressure gain combustion technologies represented sporadically in the technical committees, but there is no central focus & systems thinking approach. A PC, with its inherent systems point of view, flexibility of approach, and access to a wide range of expertise, offers AIAA such a focus that would broadly benefit the membership. Other international entities, mostly propulsion organizations are ramping up their involvement in “pressure gain combustion” activities. AIAA needs a clearly defined focal point & should work to become a leader in this growing domain. Background…Why now?

Proposed Charter Draft • The purposes of the Working Group to form the Pressure Gain Combustion Program Committee (PGC-PC) are: • to function as the AIAA focal point for all “pressure gain combustion” programs and technologies, and will work integrally across the technical committees to ensure all program areas are represented and addressed, • to help develop propulsion community assessment of pressure gain combustion technologies for various applications by organizing special sessions, workshops and panel discussions, and • to help develop a holistic, systems level approach to propulsion systems for various applications and provide feasibility assessment to policy makers, gov’t agencies and OEMs.

Scope • Coordinate and focus PGC activities across the technical committees to develop / support conferences, workshops, position papers, panel sessions and technical sessions • Support AIAA public policy forums / initiatives and provide a liaison to the committee • Characterize the critical challenges for PGC technologies • Identify rapidly advancing & emerging technologies that support propulsion systems using PGC • Identify champions for PGC initiatives within AIAA • Co-sponsor relevant conferences and events with other professional societies • Serve as the focal point and interface between AIAA and the growing PGC community, including DARPA, DOE, ONR, AFOSR, and complementary professional societies.

Objectives • Help shape the vision, direction and policy for future PGC based propulsion systems • Provide a forum in which industry, government, and academia can discuss solutions & approaches in an informal, non-competitive environment. • Assess, advocate and promote feasible systems-level approach (application dependent) to developing propulsion systems based on PGC. • Identify markets and opportunities for funding to develop promising technologies through its members and liaisons, while serving to connect funded programs, market needs, and existing technologies • Promote and support conferences, workshops, sessions and technical publications in the area of PGC. • Provide efficient knowledge transfer (education) to the AIAA membership • Ensure all relevant aspects of PGC technologies are represented in the technical committees and conferences

  19. Sample Technical Committee Responses I am also very keen to work with you and the Green Engineering Work Group. I would like to see a close alliance between the Group and the GTE TC to ensure we leverage our common interests and minimize duplication. Clearly we have much in common, so lets; set up a liaison and think about collabaration on JPC session etc. - Gas Turbine Engines Technical Committee The interests of the Space Architecture Technical Committee (SATC) include sustainable development, both in space and on Earth.
