PD planning 2009 • What am I unsure about in teaching mathematics? • What I would like to learn more about in the teaching of mathematics?
ASSESSMENT • Under each heading record the assessment you/your team use in mathematics
Assessment • http://cms.curriculum.edu.au/assessment/at/matrix.asp • http://www.esd112.org:80/smerc/mpat_detail.cfm • http://csf.vcaa.vic.edu.au/ma/ksma.htm
Six Facets of Understanding • A student who really understand • Can explain • Can interpret • Can apply • Sees in perspective • Demonstrates empathy • Reveals self – knowledge • (Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe 1998)
Differentiated Curriculum -theory based on premise that instructional approaches should vary and be adapted in relation to individual and diverse students in classroom
How can we achieve this in a Math class? • Know where the children are at • Choose relevant/ appropriate learning tasks • Explicit teaching • Focused lessons • Flexible groupings ( Use the one hour lesson planner as a guide)
Mathematics Developmental Continuum Standards and progression points Indicators of progress Focused observation and diagnostic tasks
Place value activity List down some of your favorite activities ( Some you have done before) Choose a game or activity and adapt it to be more open - ended or more challenging
PLANNING A UNIT OF WORK • Choose your topic • How long do you want it to go for? (1 or 2 weeks?) • How many sessions will you have? • Look at your assessment • Look at the continuum and progression points • Plan from point of need • Include different types of lessons e.g open ended tasks, games, skills, ICT • Have I included appropriate assessment activities? • Have I included correct mathematical language?
