WHO will this HELP?* -1st Year Teachers-all subjects -Special Education Teachers -Special Education Support Staff -Para-educators -Mentors -Administrators *Not all of the items included in the pathfinder will benefit everyone, but it will give you some things to think about, possibly implement, modify for your classroom or lead you in a direction that will help you and your specific areas of concerns.

  7. -For each item that are included, the following questions will be answered 1.WHERE-How to locate and access the item* 2.WHAT-How it will assist you as a First Year Teacher 3.WHY- How it will help alleviate some of your most valid emotions *I have used the most basic internet search techniques, as the computer literacy levels of some are not as advanced as others, and this will allow the greatest number of people to benefit from this pathfinder. Also the Links I have used are accessible to all, not just a special group with login codes, & passwords.

Thompson; $29.95, ISBN: 0-13-061644-3, March 2002 New-Teacher Toolbox, The Proven Tips and Strategies for a Great First Year by Scott Mandel $19.95, ISBN: 1569761566 The First Days Of School: How To Be An Effective Teacher by Harry K. Wong & Rosemary T. Wong 17th edition; $29.95 ISBN: 0962936065, 2004 2.These are just a few of the tool books available, your preferences will vary based on your strengths and needs. 3.Tool books are great for helping you with the inadequacies that you may feel as a new teacher.

JOURNAL ARTICLES & RESEARCH Due to the Teacher shortage, currently a lot of research is being done to figure out how to retain teachers and assist newer teachers in working with the higher standards. 1.Transitions into Teaching: Learning to Teach Writing in Teacher Education and Beyond by Pam Grossman, Sheila Valencia, Kate Evans, Clarissa Thompson, Susan Martin, Nancy Place: A longitudinal study followed 10 beginning teachers from their last year of preservice education into their first two years of full-time teaching. JOURNAL ARTICLES & RESEARCHcontinue Surviving The Crossfire: Mentoring program helps neophytes triumph over the challenges of teaching by Joyce Riha Linik; Northwest Education Magazine, Winter 2001, Volume 7, Number 2 link 2.Wonderful ideas and case studies that can give numerous additional resources, as well as the knowledge that many people, including your professors, administrator, mentor teachers, etc. know that what you are doing is hard. They want to know how they can support you and learn about new ideas that have been implemented across the country. 3.You are never alone, not only can you read about others just like you, you can see the large number of people that are working towards alleviating the issues that come about as you face the transition from student to teacher.

BLOGS Many Teachers have created BLOGS (online journals) expressing their feelings as either a first year or veteran teacher 1.The Life of a First Year Teacher BLOG link (has not gotten a job yet, but is doing observations) First Year Teacher BLOG link (she is now in her 3rd year) I Teach BLOG link (Current teacher BLOG with great links) 2.Get ideas, or emotional support as other teachers express their successes and frustrations from different points in their teaching careers. 3.You are not out there alone,receive support at anytime day or night.

SEARCH ENGINES“CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT”(2,140,000 Google Hits) Many Many pages with resource links with a good example below 1.Ask Not What Your School Can Do For You, But What You Can Do For You by Lisa Renard Classroom Leadership (ASCD Newsletter) May 1999 Volume 2 Number 8; access through the following site Middleweb.com without an ASCD membership,#13 on the current list “What Can New Teachers Do For Themselves?” 2.10 helpful ideas to prepare for this new experience and truly excel at it. Middleweb is one of the best resource sites that I have found check out the numerous links that are all worth investigating 3.This helps with the mental preparation that you will need and good tools so that you will not feel as overwhelmed.

SEARCH ENGINES“Training for Paraeducators”(283 Google Hits) I was able to narrow down my search by using the above phrase and it gave me almost all of the great Paraeducator training sites 1.Click on the following link to access the Project PARA Instructional Resources for Paraeducators. Paraeducator Training Training units include: Roles & Responsibilities,Legal & Ethical Issues, Organization & Classroom Management, Developing Instructional Skills, Behavior Management, Observing & Recording Student Performance, Communication, Special Education Programs and Procedures 2.8 phenomenal units that can used to train Paraeducators, and assist in having the best interaction and team planning sessions possible. Also a great quick resource when talking to your colleagues, parents, or administration, including a Glossary of Special Education terms. 3.Major help in the fear and insecurities areas as you now interact with Paraeducators/teaching assistants

ASK OTHERS 1-Don’t be afraid to ask for help, most veteran teachers will take it as a compliment that you need and want their assistance/mentoring -Get to know teachers in all disciplines, you never know where you greatest collaborative idea will come from. 2.Once you have found the resources and information, implementation is key, and it is much easier to implement an idea with the help of others, with various perspectives. 3.This will assist to alleviate the greatest number of those emotions including fear, insecurities, being overwhelmed, loneliness, exhaustion and a multitude of inadequacies.

ASK OTHERSadditional resources 1-The Desktop Mentor for Utah’s New Special Education Teachers: A Collection of Suggestions, Reminders, Encouragement and Appreciation; Utah State Improvement Grant: H323A990019A 2.Offers great insight and encouragement and the support so you know there are people out there that want you to succeed. 3.Emotional Support to those who have gone before. 1.Mentoring Induction Principles and Guidelines; Council for Exceptional Children Grant H32N990047 2.Includes the the why and how Mentoring works (including the research data), Conceptual Model and the recommendations for all the parties involved in new teacher mentoring. 3.Great guidelines for you and your mentor: so you can develop the type of support system that you need most.

ALREADY AVAILABLE RESOURCES 1-In most cases, you are taking over a position of another teacher, they may have already acquired, purchased, bookmarked, researched, etc. many of the item that are a concern for you and your class. Look around your room and you will be amazed what you will find. Teaching as a profession has been around a very long time and millions of others have gone through what you are, therefore there are resources everywhere you look. Also many districts have created New Teacher Reference and Quick Tip that they will have for you when you are inducted as a teacher. 2You stand in front of your students everyday and try to teach them not only the content area but to be the best everything that they can be, don’t forget that and use your strengths whatever they may be that is a resource you already have. 3.This will help you remember why you wanted to teach and at the end of the day and after all of the rollercoaster of emotions you feel, that will help you get out of bed tomorrow and do it all over again.
