Courses with Learning Units in Data Analytics IS667/CIT348 – Data Warehouse, Data Mining and Visualization DCS812 – Database Application Hsui-lin Winkler
What is so special about Data Analytics? • Emerging with rapid growth in data volume, velocity and variety. • These techniques can be applied to almost all types of data: business analytics (for business solution), decision support system (DSS), knowledge data discovery (KDD) and data-driven decision making (DDDM) in K12. • The techniques not only discover useful patterns in the data, but also develop predictive models.
Course Contents • What is data analytics? – T. Daverport Article on Data • Business decision making - The Dark Side of Customer Analytics, T. Davenport and J. Harris • Data Warehousing • Introduction to Data Mining and Data Visualization • Data Classification, Clustering and Segmenting • Association Rules or the Market Basket Analysis • Predictive Model • Decision Tree • Web Data Mining • Final Project – Applying data mining techniques
Reflections • Very positive from students about its ‘usefulness’. • Project provides in-depth learning for many students. • Bridge course work and career path.
Student’s Comments & Project (1) In conclusion, the dataset that was examined turned out to be significantly more complex than I presumed. The variables had stronger interactions than I had understood. The second regression analysis (with the decision tree) pointed towards horsepower, while excluding weight completely. By introducing interactions between weight and horsepower we can prove that weight is less significant than hypothesized.
Student’s Comments & Project (2) • This project will address how to use various analyses in predicting crime rates. It will report strategically how law enforcement can change their response and have better proactive approach in dealing with crimes. Hi Prof, I'd just like to let you know that I did a second interview yesterday for the internship, and will be starting January 23rd. Leola …. …. Hi Prof,I will finish my project today. I am happy to follow your website come January. This is my first time even hearing about SAS, and it's very interesting, I havean interview for an internship on Thursday ( company was at the career fair),and the company uses SAS. I'm very excited, and hope it works out.Leola
Student’s Comments & Project(3) • As a miserable fan of the New York Mets, I would love the opportunity to advise the Director of Baseball Operations on the type of players the team should acquire. • After listening to complaints from fans like me, we realized that the team’s roster is lacking productive players. So with that in mind, I am task with identifying the most productive players in baseball for the year 2011. Special focus will be placed on starting pitching, Outfielders and first base players.
Student’s Comments & Project(4) Thank you for all of your support and teachings this semester. I have definitely taken an interest in data analysis and hope that one day I can pursue this even further. Does Socioeconomic Environment Impact Wage? • Do persons who have the same amount of years of education earn similar or the same wage per hour? • Does a person’s age affect how much they are paid per hour? • Does a person’s location affect the amount of years of education they have and in turn their wage rate? • Do persons of different ethnic backgrounds earn similar wages? • Do fulltime and part time workers vary in wage with similar years of education?
Issues? • Some projects lack required process, but have excellent final product…be worry. • Require more guidance for the undergraduates…need dataexperience.
