Why do people share? • ►People like to share knowledge • More than 80% of all web users who create content, stated “Joy of sharing with others on interesting topics” as a reason for participation* • *(IBM/ZEM Study “Innovation in den Medien 2008”) • ►People need the right audience • Context: People need to know who needs one’s knowledge for what • Motivation: positive feedback from others is important • -> promotes our status as experts • ►People only share voluntarily, no one can ever be forced 13
Challenges of web-based knowledge transfer • Creating the right context / audience • rather same interests than same disciplines • Encouraging feedback / communication • offering user-friendly tools (messaging, discussions, groups, evaluation) • Increasing the community • reaching the critical mass via public relations (90-9-1 rule) • Ensuring quality • quality standards, wiki gardening, quality weeks, encouraging users • Financing measures • fundraising & affiliated consultancy firm • Measuring impacts / success 14
Opportunities of web-based knowledge transfer • Accessibility • from almost everywhere (increasing Internet distribution) • Cross-border and interdisciplinary • connecting people and experiences all around the world • Transparent • who writes what • Efficient • one document version; less emails; linking to information instead of producing it again and again; search functions; databases • Easy-to-use and up-to-date • information can easily be updated by everyone 15
Conclusion • Wiki offers great opportunities but also faces challenges • Success requires the right cultural, technological and organizational conditions • Wiki is only a knowledge sharing tool • Goal is free knowledge on renewable energies to accelerate their distribution and to reduce energy poverty • We need a cultural change • from “Which information shall we make accessible” • to “Which information has to be secured?” 16
