Title Agronomic and economic evaluation of weed management methods in organic herb and vegetable production Paul Kristiansen, Brian Sindel and Robin Jessop
Background • organic farming & weeds • need for information • organic weed management project
Field sites New England Tablelands
Methods • crops: lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Imperial Triumph) & echinacea (Echinacea purpurea Moench [L.]) • 4 weed control treatments + control • measured final weed and crop biomass, and treatment costs • derived gross and adjusted crop value
Weed control treatments hand weeding paper mulch tillage hay mulch
Lettuceyield gross crop value adjusted crop value
Echinaceayield gross crop value adjusted crop value
Key findings • weed control • hand weeding & mulches best • effect on crop yield (GCV) • hand weeding & hay best, others vary by crop • cost of treatments • mulches and hand weeding expensive • cost effectiveness (ACV) • lettuce: tillage & hand weeding, control too • echinacea: hand weeding & hay mulch
Implications • Lettuce • low input, cheaper methods were cost effective for short-term crop • but … longer-term impact on weed seed production? • Echinacea • high input, expensive methods were the most cost effective
