What is a Homeric Simile? • Homeric Simile— (also called an Epic Simile) extends a comparison using “like” or “as” with detail that offers a great amount of description and will often cover several lines in the epic. • Ex: “he clutched at my companions/and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies/to beat their brains out spattering the floor./ Then he dismembered them and made his meal/gaping and crunching like a mountain lion.”
What is an Epithet? • Epithet—an adjectival phrase used to define a characteristic, quality, or attribute of some person or thing. • Ex: “Odysseus, brave raider of cities” (noun) (adj.) (noun- (prep. Phrase) verb + er) • Ex: Mr. Gross, modest molder of young minds. • Ex: Ms. Durham, insane teacher of freshmen.
