  1. Turnarounds & Majors Newsletter • Ursa Major the Bear Facts April 23/14 WELCOME TO PROJECT URSA MAJOR On behalf of Syncrude, I want to take this opportunity to wish you a warm welcome and thank-you for joining us on Project Ursa Major. Our vision for this Turnaround is for all personnel involved, Syncrude employees and Contractor employees, to work as one team. By working together we will strive to produce an outstanding, positive environment for all, in which we meet our objectives in Safety, Reliability, Cost and Schedule. The entire Turnaround Leadership Team wants this turnaround to be the safest, most productive and most personally fulfilling turnaround that you have ever participated in. I personally believe we will produce outstanding results by being committed to the project and by all team members working together in removing barriers that may impact our performance. The highest priority of the Turnaround Leadership Team is to create an environment that results in an incident and injury-free workplace. We shall all challenge ourselves to achieve beyond our normal expectations. We believe with your commitment and focus on every task, moment by moment, hour by hour, day by day, we shall achieve an outstanding performance, where all involved are safe, and we are proud to be members of the Ursa Major Team.  Ted Ban Turnaround Event Manager . . • Bruce SchieweTurnarounds & Majors Manager • I personally would like to welcome and thank each person who will be contributing to the upcoming success story, “Ursa Major Turnaround”. I envision Ursa Major coming together as “One team, with One Goal and One Result and No One Gets Hurt”. • This is a major effort over a very short period of time. We are inviting over 2500 people to pull together as one, and safely turn these critical and complex operating units around for another reliable run length. Where we as Leaders make all the difference, is in engaging each individual involved in Ursa Major to be a professional. Every potential risk is to be considered and appropriate controls put in place, before the task is started. Only then can the job commence in a planful, methodical and focused manner. • As a Leader you will be setting many expectations around PPE, tools, rigging, isolations, procedures, packages and permits. You will also be confirming everyone understands inherent, or work area risks. and they take appropriate actions accordingly to do the work in the safest way. However, in almost every significant injury, incident, or job delay that we investigate, someone typically chooses to do something different than our expectations. Therefore, to be pacesetters in this industry, it is imperative that we make time to observe our worker’s actions and validate our expectations are being followed. • Whether they are on your crew or someone else’s, take care of each person as if they were your own immediate family member. Let them know when they are doing a great job! Pair them up to mentor or be mentored; have a meaningful conversation when someone is setting up a potential trap; and most importantly, lead by example! • Stop & Think • I sincerely look forward to this opportunity of seeing amazing results over the next two months! • Bruce Schiewe • Manager – Turnaround & Majors Welcome From the Department Heads For us to be successful in this event we must: • Work as a team to ensure that we keep ourselves and our peers safe at all times. Understanding the hazards travelling to and from the workface; and at the workface itself will be the key to preventing injury and incidents from occurring. Lending a helping hand to another person, or guiding them towards a safer way of performing a task is everyone’s right and duty. • Focus on the task at hand, with attention to every detail, enabling us to complete each activity precisely. Our workforce has always taken pride in their workmanship, and it is this ongoing pride that will eliminate rework. • Achieve the schedule for this event. Every step of the plan must achieve or better the planned duration. Each one of the attributes of success are in the control of the leadership team. It is your positive and proactive approach to every situation that will determine the outcome of this turnaround, and the overall performance of the company. We know there will be a great deal of hard work and challenging situations in the coming weeks. The Management team would like to thank you in advance for helping create a collaborative culture where we can all succeed. The success of this company is in your hands.
