  2. European Exploration • Europeans traveled to the Americas in the late 15th century • Carried diseases • Brought horses and guns

  3. Native Americans and Europeans Impact Each Other’s Culture • Spread Christianity • Native Americans – missions would teach them English in order to trade and negotiate in an increasingly white world • Native Americans were enslaved • Europeans learned to farm

Early Spanish Missions • European exploration of American Southwest was done by the Spanish • Launched ships from Caribbean, Mexico, and Florida • Built missions on barrier islands b/c islands were easier for ships to access • Missions wanted to convert Native Americans to Catholicism • Native Americans used the missions to help integrate themselves into the European world

  5. Hernando de Soto • 1st European to see the American Southeast, including GA • Landed on the coast of Florida in 1539 • looking for gold • Died after 3 years w/out finding any gold

  6. Causes of European Exploration • Europeans needed spices from East Asia (spices were expensive) • Asian goods were sold by Arab traders • Christopher Columbus reached the Americas in 1492 (looking for western passage); easy trade route from East Asia to Europe

  7. France • In 1562 France sent explorers to North America in search of gold • Started a colony called Charlesfort (South Carolina) • French also founded a colony in 1564 called Fort Caroline in Florida

  8. Spain • Looking for wealth in North America • Destroyed Fort Caroline • Built the 1st missions in 1568 where Fort Caroline, Florida was • Missions built to spread Catholicism (form of control) • Mission period ended in 1684

England • Queen Elizabeth I ruled Great Britain from 1558 to 1603; she was a Protestant • Great Britain was an enemy of Spain, a Catholic state • Phillip II – ruler of Spain; built the Spanish Armada (a large and powerful naval fleet) • In 1588, the British defeated the Spanish Armada • Made money by trading copper and furs
