Introduction Assignment 1 Making An Impact By Shantelle Merrifield
Concept • The museums design flows from the city to the river, which is why it is called the riverside museum • The museum symbolizes a dynamic relationship where it is the voice of both, connecting the city to the river and also the transition from one to the other • Floor space: 7,500sqm • The building houses a workshop and office space for the Clyde Maritime Trust http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverside_Museum 12-11-13 11:09pm www.archiscene.net/firms/zaha-hadid/riverside-museum-zaha-hadid/ Article: 24-08-11 3-11-13 5:10pm
construction • The building was mainly constructed by the BAM construction team • Process: 2004-2011 • Summer 2008: First turf cut by Bob Winter (Lord Provost of Glasgow) • Late September 2008: steel framework of structure was taking shape • During 2010: cladding of building put in place and internal fitting-out work continued along with external landscaping work • Late autumn 2010: structure was complete and work continued to prepare museum for opening on 21 June 2011 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverside_Museum 12-11-13 11:11pm
Funding • 74million was needed for the development of the building. 69million was invested by the Heritage Lottery Fund • The riverside museum appeal is a charitable trust looking to raise £5,000,000 in sponsorship and donations from companies, trusts and individuals for the development of the museum http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverside_Museum 3-11-13 11:14pm
What I like about the building • The architecture of the building is very unique in style • The triangular pattern on the (front) roof of the museum is what attracted me • I like that the building appears different when observed from different angles • It is a modern/futuristic building characterized by silver, smooth surfaces
Experimenting with wire and plaster • I decided to create a structure that links to both of the assignments. Using flexible wire, I created a triangular pattern, just like the pattern on the roof of the riverside museum. I then coated the wire with plaster, wrapping it around the wire firmly. I chose to focus on this aspect of the building because I find it to be the most intriguing part of the museum. I think this because it is very unusual which I like because it allows me to observe the building with curie. • The structure can relate to the song I chose because it looks like different levels of volume which could represent the notes that are being played within a song.
Final piece For my final piece I wanted to highlight the structure of the building. i used silver card alone because I wanted a smooth, shiny finish. I am disappointed about the outcome of my structure because it looks very weak and dull. If I had the time I would definitely go back and change everything about the structure because it does not look professional at all
