  2. Astute • Adjective- Wise in a clever or practical way. • Sentence- The young man was astute when he figured out that his surprise party was on the upcoming Saturday.

  3. Authentic • Adjective- Genuine; true • Sentence- You could tell the ruby wasn’t authentic when I smashed it on the ground and it shattered into a million pieces; real rubies are unbreakable. • Noun- The condition of being genuine • Sentence- The authenticity of the jewelry was questioned after it broke when someone touched it. • Verb- To prove that something is genuine. • Sentence- I authenticated that my story about flying monkeys was real by bringing in a flying monkey.

  4. Delicacy • Noun: 1. A choice item of food. • Sentence- Big lobsters are very expensive delicacies, but taste delicious. • Noun: 2. Great consideration for the feelings of others. • Sentence- I showed delicacy to the kid who ripped his pants by lending him an extra pair that were mine.

  5. Derogatory • Adjective- Expressing in a low opinion; intended to hurt the reputation of a person or thing. • Sentence- Josh was told that he was fat which was a derogatory remark to him because it made him cry.

  6. Devour • Verb: 1. To eat up hungrily. • Sentence- After the 5 mile jog, I was so hungry I devoured everything in sight not leaving a morsel behind. • Verb: 2. To take in eagerly with the eyes or ears. • Sentence- My story about the bear that almost ate me was devoured by my brother after I told it to him; he remembered every single word.

  7. Figment • Noun- Something that is made up in the mind but has no connection with reality. • Sentence- I used to have a figment of an imaginary friend named Sally, but when I got older I realized she was just a picture in my mind.

  8. Mythical • Adjective- Imaginary; not real • Sentence- Creatures like Big Foot and unicorns are mythical, but some people believe they do exist.

  9. Plumage • Noun- A bird’s feathers. • Sentence- The bird’s plumage was brightly colored plumage attracted people to it because everyone love the color of a bird’s feathers.

  10. Predatory • Adjective: 1. Living by killing and eating other animals. • Sentence- Killer whales kill their pray which makes the predatory animals. • Adjective: 2. Living by robbing or stealing from others. • Sentence- Pirates are known as predatory people because they live off of stealing. • Noun: 1. A creature that lives by killing. • Sentence- The tiger is a predator of anything that gets in its way. • Noun: 2. A person who lives by robbing. • Sentence- All people who are predators should be in jail for stealing

  11. Prior • Adjective: 1. Coming earlier in time. • Sentence- Prior to the show there was a speech about safety, then the show started. • Adjective: 2. Coming before in order or importance. • Sentence- Tickets for the show were bought prior to the show or else they would have been sold out.

  12. Scavenge • Verb- To search through or pick over, looking for something usable. • Sentence- At the orphanage the orphans scavenged through the clothes looking for something to wear. • Noun: 1. Someone who scavenges. • Sentence- The scavengers in the scavenger hunt were looking for things that related to nature. • Noun: 2. An animal that feeds on dead or decaying matter. • Sentence- A type of scavenger is a vulture. They are always looking for something dead to eat.

  13. Slaughter • Verb: 1. To kill in order to obtain meat. • Sentence- Pigs are slaughtered so they are bought and eaten. • Verb: 2. To kill people or animals in large numbers or in a cruel way. • Sentence- In the Civil War millions of people were slaughtered and the rest were injured • Noun: 1. The killing of an animal for food. • Sentence- After hunting, the hunters come back with a slaughter of dear that they end up eating. • Noun: 2. The act of killing on a large scale or in a cruel way. • Sentence- The slaughter of penguins will lead to their extinction.

  14. Solitude • Noun- The condition of being alone or at some distance from people. • Sentence- People who want solitude move to a private island in Alaska were no one is around.

  15. Ungainly • Adjective- Moving in a clumsy or awkward way. • Sentence- Penguins walk in an ungainly fashion because of the way they waddle. They look funny while they waddle.

  16. Vulnerable • Adjective- Open to attack; easily injured physically or emotionally. • Sentence- The baby water buffalo is vulnerable to its predator, the crocodile, because since it is just a baby it didn’t know how to defend itself.
