  1. International Space Weather Initiative (ISWI) Space Science Schools • Space Science Schools: General • To provide intense training to students and young scientists on the Sun – Earth System and Space Weather (main objective) • Tailored to suit the scientific interest of the region (expertise, instruments hosted, immediate need). e.g., • schools were conducted in French in Francophone • countries of Africa. • Typically co-sponsored by local scientific bodies • Partnership with SCOSTEP Capacity Building Space Science School in Ethiopia The African Space Science School was hosted by the Bahir Dar University in Bahir Dar (28 Oct – 4 Nov 2010) 43 Students from 15 African countries attended the school. 13 lecturers from 8 countries taught at the school. Deployment of ISWI instrument were conducted concurrently. Space Science School in Slovakia The European Space Science School The school was hosted by the Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (AI SAS), Tatranská Lomnica, Institute of Experimental Physics of SAS (IEP SAS), and Institute of Physics of UPJ Š (IP UPJŠ)] in Košice and the Slovak Central Observatory (SCO), Hurbanovo (21 – 27 August 2011, Tatranská Lomnica, Slovakia) 46 Students from 26 countries participated in the school; 25 lecturers from 11 countries taught at the school. Field trip was taken to the Lomnický Peak Observatory. The Space Science Schools help young people in the ISWI instrument teams to get up to speed in analyzing and interpreting data from the instruments by combining it with data from different ISWI instruments and Space-based data. In the UN tripod arrangement on basic space science (UNBSS) Education is one of the legs, instrument and observation being the other two. The space science schools have three components: (i) lectures on space science with hands-on activities, (ii) instrument workshop to expose the students to the details of the ISWI instruments, and (iii) science teacher workshop as an outreach activity to better equip the science teachers. Space Science School in Indonesia The Asia-Pacific Space Science School was hosted by the Indonesian Space Agency LAPAN in Ciloto, West Java (September 17-26, 2012). MAGDAS group from Kyushu was a major partner. 68 students from 10 countries attended the school. Female participants were in a majority in this school. 27 lecturers from 14 countries taught in the school. A one-day teacher workshop and a two-day instrument workshop were conducted.
