Together We GROW, United We BUILD! “Together We Unite To Build God’s Family” God's Expectations From The Church Acts 2:36-47
INTRODUCTION As a church, God has “expectations” from us. It’s because He is interested on how we CONDUCT OUR LIVES &express our potentials indoing His will.
What does God EXPECT from churches? What does God “expect” from Tabernacle Of Worship, Seremban?
MAIN POINTS 1. God Expects Us To Be "A LEARNING PEOPLE"
Acts 2:42a…. “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching…..” (NIV)
The English dictionary defines… "DEVOTE" “to set apart for a special use or service orto dedicate.” “to give up oneself or one’s time, energy to some purpose, activity or person.”
A growing church is a church where members are WILLING TO GIVE UP a portion of their time and energy for the study of God’s word.
2 Major reasons for becoming "A LEARNING CONGREGATION!"
A) Maturity 1 Peter 2:2…. “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.” (NIV)
Fred Cook puts it this way…. “Maturity is the ability to do a job whether supervised or not; finish it once started; carry money without spending it; and … bear an injustice without wanting to get even.” (Quoted in Lloyd Cory, Quote Unquote)
B) Ministry 2 Timothy 3:16,17…. “(v.16) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correctingand trainingin righteousness, (v.17) so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”(NIV)
The study of God's Word WILL help us “UNDERSTAND” the work of God – how it is done and what are the resources available to us.
“EQUIPPED” Greek“artios” “to complete, fully furnished.” It implies the provision of all the things requisite for a particular service, action.
2. God Expects Us To Be "A CARING PEOPLE"
Acts 2:42,46…. “(v.42) They devoted themselves …. and to the fellowship…. (v.46) Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.” (NIV)
"Koinonia" … connotes the idea of “being partner, sharer, associate & participant.” Committed to each other!
1 John 1:3…. “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.” (NIV) 2 Corinthians 13:14
Devoted to "FELLOWSHIP".... • Hebrews 10:25 • Philippians 2:1-4 The STRENGTH OF OUR FELLOWSHIP is not our personal ideas, opinions, abilities, nationality BUT our “COMMON RELATIONSHIP” with God through Jesus Christ.
3. God Expects Us To Be "A WORSHIPING PEOPLE"
Acts 2:42, 46, 47…. “ (v.42) They devoted themselves to the ... breaking of bread and to prayer… (v.46) Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, (v.47)praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.” (NIV)
Their “fellowship” was expressed not only in caring for each other, but in corporate worship.
Two aspects of the Early Church's worship, which exemplify its balance.... It was both “FORMAL” & “INFORMAL” It was both “JOYFUL” & “REVERENT”
William Templesays this about “WORSHIP” …. “The world can be saved by one thing and that is worship.
… For to worship is to quicken the conscience by the holiness of God, to feed the mind with the truth of God, to purge the imagination by the beauty of God, to open the heart to the love of God, to devote the will to the purpose of God.”
4. God Expects Us To Be "A WITNESSING PEOPLE"
Acts 2:43, 47…. “ (v.43) Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles... (v.47) praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” (NIV) Acts 4:31-33
The Holy Spirit is a missionary Spirit who created a missionary church. One overriding MOTIVE…. "Expansion of the faith through MISSIONARY WITNESS in the power of the Spirit."
Vital lessons on local church evangelism.... They were “FILLED” with Holy Spirit. They “PREACHED” the Word of God. They continued to “TESTIFY” about Christ. The Lord “ADDED” people daily.
Bill Bright said…. “Success in witnessing is simply taking the initiative to share Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit, then leaving the results to God.”
CONCLUSION God expects us to have “A BALANCE CHURCH LIFE.” • Be a LEARNING PEOPLE. • Be a WORSHIPING PEOPLE. • Be a CARING PEOPLE. • Be a WITNESSING PEOPLE. Let's pray!
