Friedrich Ludwig GottlobFrege • Born November 8, 1848 • German logician, mathematician, and philosopher • Retired in 1918
Education • Spring 1869 he began his studies at the University of Jena • Studied chemistry, mathematics, and philosophy • Got Ph.D. in 1873
works • 1879 his first major work was published • Presented new method of logical language • 1884 published ”The foundations of Arithmetic”
Works • Volume 1, natural numbers and properties • Volume 2 and 3, real numbers and demonstration of properties
accomplishments • Became a professor at the University of Jena • His work was often opposed by his contemporaries. • Became known as one of the most important logicians in history.
Accomplishments cont. • Developed the theory of sense and denotation into a philosophy language • Showed that arithmetic could be reduced to second-order logic with Hume’s Principle.
Family Life • A minimal amount is known of his family life • Married Margaret Lieseburg after the publication of Begriffsschrift. • Had at least two children that unfortunately passed away at a young age.
