  20. PMO Methodology – Solution Delivery

  21. Integrating PMO and Architecture – Increasing Project Success Ratios

  22. Portfolio Management • Application Portfolio • All current applications (c. 230) with details of functions provided, application interfaces &dependencies, OS & platform dependencies, instances hosted, lifecycle status, etc. • Maintained in DB with updates on a monthly basis. Reports & documents generated & placed in PMO portal • Project Portfolio • All projects underway and planned for the current + next 4 financial years (c. 35 current/180 planned) • Maintained in DB with updates on a weekly basis. 23. Where it all comes together…. • Architecture and PMO manage towards the strategy • Architecture deeply integrated in PMO Methodology • Enterprise components, models, patterns, etc. are mandated deliverables in project artefacts where required in key areas • All project solutions are subject to architecture review • Solution Architecture deliverables subsumed within the PMO methodology • PMO acts as conduit for Architecture referrals • PM council raises issues requiring EA team involvement • Architecture reports changes and issues to the PM council • PMO tracks activities and issues across all tracks

  24. Benefits Architecture and PMO Alignment • Single point of reference for projects • Single understanding of both strategic and tactical directions • Change control across the enterprise • Keeping the Strategy relevant • Common understanding of the business strategy & needs • Able to track the strategy against the real-world picture • Easy to identify and control strategy change • We can Plan Strategically and Deliver Tactically • Iterative delivery on long-term projects • Higher potential for re-use of common technology solutions across projects • More effective use of enterprise data and integration architectures across projects • Projects now share integration points at the enterprise level – 1st move towards SOA

  25. Experience • Enterprise Architecture needs to be closely aligned with project solution architectures • Explicit mappings from enterprise to solution artefacts • EA “cherry-pick” key technology solutions evolving in project space • Portfolio Management – It’s not just projects anymore • Application, Project and Infrastructure portfolios need to be kept synchronized • PMO needs to own the project methodology • Management and conformance are absolutely necessary • Architecture needs its own artefacts managed in the methodology framework • Strategy will change – be prepared to manage and control it
